MadLab: The Kill ‘em With Kindness Comedy Festival

This six-week festival features a different comedy act each weekend highlighted by the opening act, The Cody Rivers Show from Washington. Each weekend will bring you anything from sketch comedy to short-form improv, from stand-up to long-form improv. It's a little something for everyone each week.
Bread and Circus Theatre: Maggie’s Magic Teapot
March 12-21, 2010 / Harmony Artistic Center
Maggie's Magic Teapot by Faye Parker is an Irish treat just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Maggie and her grandfather, Old Billy O'Morra, are about to lose their home to the heartless Shaemus O'Hoolihan. Shaemus is only interested in forcing people from their homes and taking all their gold and possessions. What's worse, he wants to take Maggie away and force her to be his servant girl. But, fortunately for Maggie, there's a little leprechaun named Sean who can magically grow larger and smaller at will, and decides to help Old Billy and Maggie defeat Shaemus. Combines live actors, puppetry, song and dance in a "sure 'n 'begorrah" good time for all.

BalletMet: Carmina Burana
March 5-13, 2010 / Capitol Theatre, Riffe Center
Dwight Rhoden's ballet explodes with power and strength, stirring souls and igniting passion. Inspired by the collection of 13th century medieval songs and poems written by monks, this riveting and sexual work moves audiences with dramatic scenes, highly physical choreography and the gripping music of Carl Orff. The Cleveland Plain Dealer said of Carmina's world premiere, "Fiery ensemble dances develop into a violent orgy that ultimately resolves into a joyous celebration." Before Carmina, the program kicks off with a world premiere by choreographer and 15-season Company dancer Jimmy Orrante, following the success of his The Great Gatsby (2009).

Bread and Circus Theatre: Dancing at Lughnasa

The Tony Award winning Dancing at Lughnasa tells the story of an Irish country family in the early part of the 20th century through the eyes of Michael Evans, and his memory of August 1936, when he lived in the town of Ballyberg, County Donegal, with his mother, Christina, and his four aunts: Kate, a Catholic school teacher; Maggie, a jokester and the family confidant; Agnes, fastest knitter in Ballyberg and the family caregiver; and Rose, the free spirit who is eternally a child. It's an eventful month for Michael and for the Mundy sisters. Their only brother, Father Jack, returns from 25 years of being a missionary in Africa, to recuperate from a bout of malaria. And Michael's far-roving father, Gerry, makes a surprise visit to check-in with Christina, and fall madly in love for the first time - again.

3 in 30: Twilight

Back with its 9th edition and the last one at Madlab's current space, it is 3 in 30. This time in the early time slot. Every 2 months (or so or less), MadLab will present 3 original 10-minute plays based on a common theme. In other words, 3 plays in 30 minutes (or so). This month's theme is Twilight, a nod to the book and motion picture and the twilight of MadLab's time. In every cycle a new theme is presented, pitches pitched and selected, plays written, directors and casts selected, and the plays rehearsed and performed. And then the cycle begins again.
BalletMet: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Along with this one-act story ballet, see a sensual world premiere from Ma Cong that blends Eastern and Western cultures through organic, grounded movement brimming with emotion, set to the music of Dhafer Youssef.
Exhibit: Let the Games Begin: A Century of Sports Cartoons
January 15 - April 9, 2010 / Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, The Ohio State University
More than 50 sports cartoons will be on display as part of the exhibition Let the Games Begin: A Century of Sports Cartoons. The exhibition features original drawings by some of the most prolific and influential cartoon artists of the past century and includes likenesses of a wide variety of sports figures including Jack Dempsey, Dizzy Dean, Ted Williams, Willie Shoemaker, as well Ohio State athletics. The cartoons featured in Let the Games Begin: A Century of Sports Cartoons span the twentieth century from a time when boxing and horse racing captured the nation's undivided attention to the end of the century and beyond, long after any remaining shreds of purity and innocence had been stripped from the public's collective perception of the athletes it followed and admired. Drawn from several of the Cartoon Library's collections, the works featured in this exhibit were published in newspapers from all over the United States. Artists featured in the exhibition include Willard Mullin, Arnold Roth, William Summers, Karl Hubenthal, the Columbus Dispatch's Jeff Stahler, and more. Let the Games Begin : A Century of Sports Cartoons is in conjunction with Hard Targets, an exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts from January 30 through April 11, 2010.
